UP Concert Chorus Celebrates 60th Year With Hope

Press Release

The UP Concert Chorus commences its 60th year with a new project: “Sama-sama: Liwanag Sa Bagong Yugto.” This is in continuation with the group’s triennial theme, “Sama-sama” as its defining title since 2020.

UP Concert Chorus presents “Sama-sama: Liwanag Sa Bagong Yugto”, featuring five choral arrangements with accompanying music videos from August to December 2022

For 60 years, the UPCC has surpassed countless difficulties and crises since its establishment by living its very own unofficial motto, “adjust.” “Sama-sama” continues to be the message that the UP Concert Chorus has been focusing on and this year, they will move forward with hope.

Choral music has always had a healing effect and social integration that continues to be important today. The transition from virtual to face-to-face meetings of voices provides us with new momentum. Proven its resilience, the UPCC continues to overcome any obstacle that they may face because together, they will and can carry on.

Last year, through Sama-Sama: Together, We Shall Overcome, the group was able to deliver hope through music and raise in-kind assistance to various communities, namely the UP-Katipunan Jeepney Drivers, Save Arboretum Network, and Silungang Molave. UPCC continues to spread hope and will be reaching out to four beneficiaries this year — UP Pook Villages A and C, the dormitory managers of the UP Office of Student Housing, and Rey T. Paguio Scholars.

Behind The Name

SAMA-SAMA as an adverb means “in concert, all together”.

“SAMA” forms the first two syllables of the homographs SAHAN, which means to accompany, and SAMAHÁN, meaning organization or group. Choral singing best represents these homographs as the ideal avenue of communication that touches hearts deep within and opens closed minds: inspiring and informing, reaching out and giving joy significantly when one is muted by the dissonances and the gravity of the worldly noises causing conflicts amongst individuals.

The Project Line-up

SAMA-SAMA: Liwanag sa Bagong Yugto will feature five choral arrangements with accompanying music videos.

The UPCC remains diligent through virtual performances and practices to continue to build a new diverse repertoire for the new generation to perform, furthering their legacy of choral excellence. The works are arranged by UPCC members, alumni, and friends who bring their artistry and passion to the musical works that are set to appear this year.
